Meetings and conferences

Kick-off Meeting, 6-7th November 2006, Oslo, Norway

The main objective of the meeting is to initiate the collaboration between the scientists involved in the EMEP4HR project. It is important for all participants in the project to get acquainted to each other and to the permanent staff at MSC-West.

After this kick-off meeting, all participants should have a good idea of the main objectives of the project. We will also identify and agree on the work plan and main deliverables from each group/institute for 2006 and the first half of 2007.

Participants are requested prepare a short presentation of their role in the project and their proposal for work plan and methods under EMEP4HR. Discussion items are to be identified in their presentations in order to allow an informed discussion on the methods and procedures to be used in the project.

2nd plenary meeting, 28-29th June 2007, Oslo, Norway

The main objective of the meeting is to trace the progress within the EMEP4HR project. This is a working meeting where status of the work at the four participating institutes (EKONERG, MHSC, AMGI and met.no) will be presented and discussed.

There has been considerable progress at MHSC with follow-up and advice from AMGI and met.no with this project. We are now at a milestone where the contributions from AMGI and EKONERG become more substantial. The purpose of this meeting is to secure an optimal integration of the work of EKONERG and AMGI to the EMEP4HR project. Therefore the meeting will be divided in plenary sessions and bilateral working group sessions.

The expected output of the meeting is:

1) an agreed procedure to integrate emission results in the EMEP4HR project,
2) priorities for further testing and implementation of diffusion parametrisations,
3) proposed procedures for treatment of meteorological data in different scales,
4) preparation for local and urban scale applications
5) an agreement on the agenda for the All-Staff meeting in the autumn 2007.

3rd plenary meeting, 17th-19th October 2007 Dubrovnik, Croatia

The main objective of the meeting is to trace the progress within the EMEP4HR project. This is again a working meeting where status of the work at the four participating institutes (EKONERG, MHSC, AMGI and met.no) will be presented and discussed.

The meeting is structured in three parts. Part I identifies the main progress so far with focus on the problems that need to be solved. We will then split in three groups in order to work out bilaterally solutions to these problems and secure the progress of the project. In this second part of the meeting, we are supposed to work together and make progress. In the last part of the meeting, we are to agree on the next stages of the project and its main deliveries in winter 2007/2008.

The expected output of the meeting is:

1) an evaluation of the area sources in 10x10km2 and agreed procedure to introduce large point sources in the inventory
2) an evaluation of the progress with testing of vertical diffusion schemes
3) agreed priorities for testing horizontal diffusion parametrisation in the model,
4) an agreed plan for preparation for local and urban scale applications
5) a progress work and publication plan for 2007/2008 for all four institutes

1st EMEP Open Source Training Course, Oslo, Norway, 13th October 2008

The aim of this course is to train scientists in use of the EMEP Unified model.

The course will be held at met.no's research department in the CIENS building.

There will be two interactive sessions (agenda):

In the first session, we are preparing a series of questions on the use of the model that the participants will have to work with. The questions/exercises will include examples on for instance
       1) how to run the EMEP model for a selected period and domain
       2) how to select different outputs of the model
       3) how to include a new species in the model runs
       4) how to run a future scenario
       5) how to run a SR run or
       6) a tracer experiments, etc...

In the second session, we open also for possible in-depth explanations of particular processes/parametrisations included in the model.

4rd plenary meeting, 9-10th February 2009, Oslo, Norway

The main objective of the meeting is to trace the progress within the EMEP4HR project and secure a smooth and successful conclusion of the project by the end of 2009. It is the time to agree on a publication plan and secure that the 2 PhD candidates can present their thesis in the course of the year.

The first day of the meeting is intended as a presentation of status by each participant. In the second day, we intend an open discussion that should give us main agreements on what is realistic to fulfil in the course of the year.

5th plenary meeting (and PhD defence), 21-24th September 2009, Zagreb, Croatia

The main objective of the meeting was firstly to attend and participate in the defence of Amela Jericevic's PhD Thesis, and secondly to assess progress and remaining issues during the final months of the EMEP4HR project. The PhD Thesis, based upon work done within EMEP4HR was a great success. The EMEP4HR meeting identified some problems with the EMEP mode implementation, which were meanwhile solved within the meeting timetable. The main conclusion was that te major goals of EMEP4HR had been delivered, and plans were made for the final steps and reporting.
